CS2 Skin Patterns Explained

CS2 Skin Patterns Explained

Two AK-47 Case Hardened listings can share a wear tier, a condition and a finish, and still sit orders of magnitude apart on price. Nothing about the float explains it. CS2 skin patterns do, and the whole difference comes down to one hidden number attached to the item.

The Paint Seed Decides Everything

Each pattern-based finish is assigned one of 1,000 possible paint seeds when it is created. The seed sets the offset and rotation used to map that finish’s master texture onto the weapon model. Shift the texture and the colours land somewhere else entirely. Like float, the seed is rolled once and never changes.

Not Every Skin Has One That Matters

Plenty of finishes are static. The artwork sits in a fixed position, and only wear changes how it looks, so the seed exists but does nothing visible. Pattern-based finishes are the ones where colour placement moves per seed. Knowing which group a skin belongs to tells you whether the seed is worth checking, or whether float is the only variable in play.

Case Hardened and the Blue Gems

This is the finish that made patterns famous. Case Hardened mixes blue, gold and purple across a texture sheet, and a handful of seeds place almost solid blue over the visible face. Seed 661 on the AK-47 is the most sought-after of all. On knives, Karambit seed 387 plays the same role. For this finish, pattern dominates pricing and float barely registers.

Fade Percentage Is Just the Seed

Fade finishes run a gradient along the weapon, and the seed changes the rotation, which changes how much of the colour spread you see. The community expresses this as a fade percentage. The published open-source calculator maps seeds to a range running from 80% to 100%, so even the worst fade shows most of the gradient. Every model has its own texture mapping.

Marble Fade and Fire and Ice

Marble Fade scatters red, blue and yellow instead of a smooth gradient, and value follows colour distribution. The premium pattern is Fire and Ice, where red and blue meet with no yellow visible on the display side. Collectors grade these by how cleanly the two colours separate, and top examples trade at multiples of a standard Marble Fade in the same wear.

Doppler Phases Work Differently

Doppler is sorted into named phases rather than scored on a scale:

  • Phases 1 to 4, each a recognised colour mix, priced separately from one another.
  • Ruby, deep red, and Sapphire, deep blue, both scarce and both expensive.
  • Black Pearl, dark with an oil-slick sheen, the rarest of the three gem phases.
  • Emerald, which appears on Gamma Doppler rather than the original finish.

A listing that says only Doppler without naming the phase is hiding the most important fact about it.

How to Read a Seed

In game, inspect the skin and open the information panel, the same place the float sits. Outside the client, paste an inspect link into a pattern checker such as pattern.wiki, CSFloat or Skinflow. The tool returns the seed alongside screenshots of what it looks like on that model. Checking takes seconds.

Patterns in Case Battles

Opening is where seeds actually get rolled, and a pattern-based finish from a battle can be worth far more than the headline price suggests. Check what you pulled before selling it straight back at an index valuation. That habit matters more on CS2 case battle sites than anywhere else, because battles produce items in volume.

Why Instant Sell-Back Punishes Rare Seeds

Instant sell-back bots price from an index that ignores CS2 skin patterns, so a blue gem sold that way fetches the same as a muddy one. It is an expensive mistake and an easy one to make. Rare seeds belong on a marketplace that displays the seed, where a buyer can see what they are getting.

Three Checks Before Selling

  • Confirm the finish is pattern-based rather than static, since most are static.
  • Look the seed up in a database and note which tier it falls into.
  • Compare against completed sales of that seed, not the finish’s index price.

Where to Sell One Properly

Instant liquidity and pattern-aware pricing rarely come together, so the choice is usually speed against value. Platforms sit at different points on that trade-off, and our csgoroll alternatives comparison is where to compare them.

Picking a Platform for It

If you open often and sell rarely, speed matters more, which is the case for most people opening on CSGORoll. If you hold and sell selectively, a marketplace that displays seeds will pay you properly. The broader list of top CS2 gambling sites covers where each one sits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a paint seed change after I get the skin?

No. The seed is assigned once at creation and is permanent. Trading, playing with or storing the item leaves it untouched, exactly like the float value does.

How do I know if a finish is pattern-based?

Check it in a pattern database. If browsing several seeds shows visibly different colour placement on the same model, the finish is pattern-based and the seed is worth checking.

Is seed 661 the only blue gem worth buying?

No. Collectors rank Case Hardened seeds in published tiers by blue coverage. Seed 661 tops the AK-47 list, alongside seeds such as 151, 955 and 321, and lower tiers still carry premiums.

Does a rare pattern raise the price in every wear?

Usually, though heavier wear mutes the effect by scratching the surface the pattern sits on. The same seed is worth noticeably more in Factory New than in Battle-Scarred.

Will stickers cover the pattern?

They can. Stickers sit in fixed positions, and on some weapons those overlap the most desirable part of a pattern. Buyers chasing a rare seed usually want it unstickered.
