The CS2 skin rarity tiers are a colour, a name and a drop rate. They are not a price. Some Covert skins cost less than a Restricted one from the right collection, and the gap confuses people constantly. Here is what each grade actually signals.

The Seven CS2 Skin Rarity Tiers in Order

TierColourWhere it appears
Consumer GradeWhite or greyDrops and collections, never cases
Industrial GradeLight blueDrops and collections, never cases
Mil-SpecBlueThe base tier in every case
RestrictedPurpleCases and collections
ClassifiedPinkCases and collections
CovertRedThe top gun tier in a case

Knives and Gloves Sit Outside the Ladder

They occupy a case’s rare special item slot, shown in gold, rather than sitting in the normal ladder. Knives carry the Covert classification on the Steam Market, while gloves are marked Extraordinary. Either way a case produces one in place of its usual contents, which is why it counts as a separate outcome rather than a very good Covert pull. Only glove-bearing cases produce gloves; the rest yield knives in that slot.

Contraband Means Exactly One Skin

The orange tier holds the M4A4 Howl and nothing else. Valve withdrew the artwork after a copyright dispute, stopped it dropping, and left existing copies in circulation. That makes it the only genuinely closed supply in the game. No new ones enter, which is a different kind of scarcity from a low drop rate.

What Cases Can and Cannot Give You

Cases start at Mil-Spec. Consumer and Industrial Grade skins come from drops and collection farming, never from opening. Across the four weapon tiers the odds follow a five-to-one ratio, with the rare special slot sitting outside it:

  • Mil-Spec blue: about 79.92%
  • Restricted purple: about 15.98%
  • Classified pink: about 3.2%
  • Covert red: about 0.64%
  • Rare special item: about 0.26%

These are not estimates. Valve disclosed exactly these figures in 2017, through its Chinese partner, to satisfy that market’s loot-box disclosure rules. There is no odds page on its public site, so that disclosure remains the source.

Rarity and Value Are Different Questions

A tier tells you how often a skin appears inside its own container. It says nothing about demand, which collection it came from, how long that collection has been out of rotation, or whether anybody likes the design. A Mil-Spec from a discontinued collection can out-price a Covert from a case that still drops. Scarcity sets the floor and demand sets everything above it.

Three Things That Override the Grade

  • Collection age. Retired collections have fixed supply, so their skins appreciate while active-case skins dilute.
  • Float and pattern. A low float or rare paint seed can multiply price within any tier.
  • Design popularity. An unloved Covert sits unsold while a well-liked Restricted clears instantly.

Where StatTrak Fits

StatTrak is not a rarity tier. It is a counter attached to an item, available on most weapon finishes and on knives, and it sits alongside the grade rather than above it. A StatTrak Mil-Spec is still Mil-Spec. The premium varies hugely by finish, and on cheap skins the counter can be worth more than the skin itself.

Souvenir Skins Follow Their Own Rules

Souvenir versions come from tournament packages rather than cases, carry gold stickers from the match they commemorate, and use the same colour grades. Their value is driven by the event, the teams and the player stickers, not by the tier. A Souvenir Consumer Grade from a famous match can beat a Covert in price, which breaks the ladder entirely.

Reading the Colour Before You Open

Knowing the CS2 skin rarity tiers changes how a case looks. Four in five outcomes are blue, the red is under one in a hundred, and the gold is rarer still. Anyone comparing CS2 case opening sites is really comparing which containers a platform offers and what it puts inside them.

Third-Party Boxes Ignore Valve’s Ratios

Independent sites build their own boxes and set their own drop tables, so the figures above do not carry across. The ones worth using publish a table per box and run a provably fair system you can verify afterwards. CSGORoll is the starting point on this site, and its boxes are worth reading the same way. Check the box itself rather than the homepage, and read the bonus terms alongside it on the csgoroll promo code page.

Comparing Platforms on Disclosure

Disclosure is the useful comparison point, not the headline rate. A site that names every item and its probability is giving you something Valve’s own cases do not. Our full list of CS2 skin gambling sites is the place to start that comparison.

Using the Grades in Practice

Treat the tier as a starting point and nothing more. Check which collection a skin belongs to, whether that collection still drops, and what the float and seed look like. A grade narrows the question down. Those three checks answer it, and they are what separates a confident purchase from a guess. Learn the colours first, then stop relying on them.

One Last Point on Colour

The colour you see in a case is a supply signal, not a verdict on quality or price. Plenty of blue skins are better designs than the red in the same container. Buy what you want to look at, and let the grade tell you only how hard it will be to find again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the tiers of CS2 skins?

Consumer Grade, Industrial Grade, Mil-Spec, Restricted, Classified, Covert and Contraband, running lowest to highest. Knives and gloves sit outside that ladder, in a case’s rare special item slot.

Which CS2 skin is the rarest?

By tier, the M4A4 Howl, the only Contraband item and no longer obtainable since Valve withdrew the artwork. Supply is fixed at whatever was already in circulation when it stopped dropping.

Do all cases contain a knife?

Every weapon case can produce a rare special item, but only in place of a normal outcome and at roughly a quarter of one percent. Most cases never produce one.

Why is my Covert skin worth less than a purple one?

Because demand and collection age set price, not grade. A Restricted skin from a retired collection has fixed supply, while a Covert from an active case keeps gaining new copies.

Does rarity affect gameplay in any way?

No. Grades are cosmetic labels only. A Consumer Grade rifle and a Covert version of the same weapon behave identically in aiming, recoil, damage and every other mechanic.
